Grooveshark as a Streaming Music Player Widget for WordPress

As you’ll notice by peering over to the right of this (or any) page within my WordPress blog, I’m using a streaming music player widget called Grooveshark. It was actually pretty simple to setup, so here’s a brief mini-tutorial to put a Grooveshark music player widget on your WordPress Blog.

First, you have to register for a Grooveshark account at grooveshark.com. From there, you can either search for music of all kinds of different genres. They do have a decent selection of lo-fi and indie music to browse. Alternatively, you can upload music of your own – make SURE you are the copyright holder of it.

Once you’ve found music and have put together a playlist for it, head over to Grooveshark’s streaming music widget area. They have a very easy and user friendly GUI to customize your widget so that it matches your WordPress, Blogspot, or whatever other blog stylistically. Once you stylize the widget – you’ll then populate it with music. You can either add individual songs or full playlists from your Grooveshark account. Then just simply paste the widget code into your blog. You can even do a few other advanced options like setting autoplay on (change the p variable in the widget code to =1 instead of =0).

The lack of streaming music options had always been a dealbreaker for me from switching my website to WordPress, but Grooveshark’s streaming music widget turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.
